One of them is an automatic tracking system for suffering aged using PHS network as basic technology. The other one is an automatic identification system for individuals in hospital using UHF band RFID. And another one is an automatic counting system for surgical equipments using UHF band RFID. A possibility of new tracking system for the aged is analyzed by simulation of signal intensity distribution and its experiments. Personal Handy-phone System (PHS) was applied as an information-network to track the aged. In this proposed system, if the relay station detects a signal from a marker, the aged can be tracked during strolling. Infusion pump and syringe pumps are managed by the hospital’s Medical Engineering (ME) center and must be maintained periodically to guarantee the reliability and safety of the equipment. However, in the busy environment of hospitals, some of these pumps can get misplaced or lost. As a means of monitoring the location of this equipment, the authors devised a UHF band passive RFID tag system. From the results of the experiments, the locations of the\nRFID tagged pumps and patients were identified accurately and easily within the tested areas of the hospital. Vestigial remnant of surgical instruments in the body is a serious problem. Two dimensional symbol is being used to help managing this problem. However, the symbols have to be identified one at a time, since the symbols are a sort of printed matter. To improve the deficiencies of this system, a UHF band passive RFID system was developed. From experimental results, 50 surgical instruments were identified in less than one second with this new RFID system.
