We study the microstructure evolution in a wrought low-carbon steel, ASTM-A105, containing C: 0.35 mass%, subjected to tension-compression fatigue loading through in-situ monitoring of axial-shear-wave attenuation and velocity with electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR). This is a combination of the resonant technique and a non-contacting electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). The EMAT operates with the magnetostrictive mechanism and is the key to establish a continuous monitoring for microstructural change in the material’s surface region with high sensitivity. We find that the attenuation is highly sensitive to the accumulated fatigue damage, showing two peaks around 2 % and 90 % of the whole life. This novel phenomenon is interpreted in terms of drastic change in dislocation mobility and rearrangement, which is supported by TEM observations. This technique has a potential to assess the damage advance and to predict the fatigue life of steels. |
